Anne Leplae - Executive Director
Anne's family, with her Belgian father and French mother, immigrated to the US when her father accepted a position as a physics professor at UW – Milwaukee. Anne has been the Executive Director of Alliance Française de Milwaukee since 1998. Anne lived several years in France and Belgium as well as in Morocco where she served in the Peace Corps as an English teacher in a small town in the Middle Atlas Mountains from 1984 to 1986. She has worked extensively in the non-profit sector, including refugee resettlement with Russians in Chicago and literacy work with immigrant women in France. Anne holds a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Macalester College and master's degrees in Nonprofit Management and International Relations from UW – Milwaukee. She also participated in the Future Milwaukee program at Marquette University, class of 2007. Anne was nominated to l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 2012.
Brett Lipshutz – Interim French Language Center Director
Brett Lipshutz is a diverse, educational professional with a career history of success leveraging strong teaching and leadership skills. He has lived in Senegal and France and has traveled widely; these experiences have shown him time and time and again the importance of communication with people in their native languages. In addition, his time spent as Chair of World Language, director of a language school and an award-winning teacher has allowed him to develop a philosophy of language education that is distinctive and unique. Brett is recognized for his resourceful and visionary teaching and leadership, as well as his passion for the arts, social justice, and creating community-driven environments that give opportunity for people to connect through language.
Brett is highly proficient in English, French, and Spanish; he also speaks intermediate Hebrew and Yiddish and novice Mandarin. Brett is also a well-known Irish and Baroque flute player. He also co-owns and operates Happy Chik Tofu, a Milwaukee-based artisan chickpea tofu maker. He has been a valued member of the Alliance Française community for over a decade.
Erin Lewenauer – Director of Marketing and Cultural Engagement
Erin studied French from 7th grade through college where she was fortunate to participate in the Vassar-Wesleyan Program in Paris. Living with a wonderful French family solidified her passion for French language and culture. Before returning to her hometown of Milwaukee, she lived in Poughkeepsie, Bordeaux, Boulder, New York City, and Pittsburgh, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts in Writing. With fond memories of her internship at l’Alliance Française in 2002, Erin is excited to once again be able to contribute to the inspiring organization. She has worked at the AF since 2015 and also writes for several publications.
